The first solar eclipse of 2026 will take place on February 17 and will be an annular solar eclipse, popularly known as the “Ring of Fire.” This phenomenon occurs when the Moon passes directly between the Earth and the Sun but is too far from Earth to completely cover the Sun. As a result, a bright ring of sunlight remains visible around the edges of the Moon, creating a stunning ring-like appearance in the sky. The full “Ring of Fire” effect will be visible mainly from remote regions such as Antarctica, while several parts of the Southern Hemisphere, including areas of South America and Africa, may witness a partial eclipse. The event will not be visible from India. Astronomers advise people to use proper eclipse glasses or solar viewing equipment to safely observe the phenomenon, as looking directly at the Sun without protection can cause serious eye damage.
